English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In English, students study a wide range of classic and contemporary texts to deepen their understanding of both the English language and the world that we live in. These texts include a wide range of spoken, written, visual and media texts from Australia, Asia and around the world. The complexity of these texts and student writing increased as students progress through their schooling, ensuring that all students are challenged and supported to achieve their best and become empathetic global citizens.

Developing proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers, lifelong learners and informed, active participants in Australian society. Their understanding of English through knowledge and skills acquisition is essential to their intellectual, social and emotional development in addition to giving students the literacy skills to succeed both within and beyond the education system.

Through their study of English, students develop a love of literature and a passion for reading and writing. The English course gives students opportunities to learn to work independently, reflect on their learning, and work collaboratively with others. Students have access to numerous enrichment opportunities through their study of English, including:

• Public speaking competitions

• The Premier’s Debating Competition

• The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry competition

• A wide range of writing competitions
